⚽ West Ham United 3-1 Newcastle United: Match Report

West Ham United secured a vital 3-1 victory over Newcastle United on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the London Stadium in a Premier League clash.1 The win marked the first under new Head Coach Nuno Espírito Santo and ended a long, winless run at home for the Hammers.2

Key Moments

  • Early Newcastle Lead: Despite Jarrod Bowen hitting the post just moments earlier, Newcastle took an early lead in the 4th minute through a well-taken goal by Jacob Murphy.3

  • Controversy: West Ham's frustration grew when a penalty awarded to them after Malick Thiaw's challenge on Jarrod Bowen was overturned by VAR after the referee consulted the pitchside monitor.4

  • West Ham Equaliser: The Hammers' persistence paid off in the 35th minute when Lucas Paquetá scored a superb equaliser from outside the box.5

  • Hammers Take the Lead: West Ham went into the break with an advantage after an own goal in the 45th minute when Newcastle defender Sven Botman inadvertently turned an Aaron Wan-Bissaka cross into his own net.

  • Late Sealer: Tomáš Souček wrapped up the three points in the 90th minute (+7), bundling home a rebound after a Jarrod Bowen effort, confirming the 3-1 scoreline.6 A Freddie Potts goal in the second half was disallowed for offside in the build-up.

Analysis and Reaction

The match was a tale of two teams in contrasting form, but West Ham's desire shone through. They displayed resilience and teamwork to come back from an early deficit and overcome several setbacks, including the disallowed penalty and goal.7 Lucas Paquetá was highlighted as the Man of the Match, delivering a strong performance marked by his brilliant goal and immense work rate in midfield.8

In contrast, the performance was a "horror show" for Newcastle United, as described by manager Eddie Howe. Despite dominating possession (62% to West Ham's 38%), the Magpies lacked energy, creativity, and were toothless in attack for much of the game, registering an xG of only 0.54.9 The defeat ended a brief run of good form for Newcastle and extended their winless streak on the road in the Premier League.

West Ham United celebrated a much-needed victory, their first Premier League home win in 248 days, offering a glimmer of hope under their new management.10 Newcastle United will look to regroup after what was described as comfortably their worst performance of the season.
